Should you follow a hit-and-run driver?

If your vehicle gets struck by a hit-and-run driver, to say that it is frustrating is an understatement. Not only have they damaged your vehicle and potentially injured you, but they are now refusing to take responsibility for their actions and trying to flee the scene. This is illegal, and it certainly puts you and anyone else who is injured in a very difficult position.

As a result, people sometimes decide that they are going to follow the hit-and-run driver and attempt to stop them. Should you do this?

Following the driver may actually be illegal itself

If you ask the police, they will typically tell you that you should not follow a hit-and-run driver. What you should do is gather as much evidence as you can about the vehicle. Try to memorize part of the license plate number for instance, or make note of the color, make and model of the car. Then contact the police and give them this information so that they can locate that driver and make an arrest. If you need to seek compensation for your injuries, you can do so after the person has been found.

The issue with following a hit-and-run driver is that it could cause you to also break the law. For example, if you exceed the speed limit while following them, that is a traffic violation and could even increase the odds that you will cause a subsequent accident. It is never wise to take illegal action yourself, even if you are simply attempting to seek justice.

Once the police have located the hit-and-run driver, then you will just need to know about the steps to take to get the compensation you deserve for your injuries and other costs.
